    Under direction of the Sewer Maintenance Manager, inspects, repairs, and maintains the City’s sanitary sewer and storm sewer collection systems, and appurtenances; and performs related work as required.


    1. Operates light maintenance equipment and trucks such as an end loader, snow plow, air compressor, flusher, pickup trucks, dump trucks, and other small maintenance equipment. Assists in the operation of heavy maintenance equipment such as a jetter-vaccum combination sewer cleaning truck, backhoe, and other equipment as necessary.

    2. Assists in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of the City’s lift stations and pump stations.

    3. Works as a member of a team of maintenance personnel who have the capability to adjust sewer manhole sections, repair sanitary and storm sewer, intakes, catch basins and culverts, and detention areas.

    4. Performs tree cutting and removal. Includes use of a variety of saws, backhoe with a clam bucket for large trunks, and manual removal of smaller limbs.

    5. Assists with the installation and maintenance of erosion control measures such as silt fence and erosion control blankets.

    6. Washes and cleans equipment as needed.

    7. Timely attendance is mandatory for emergency snow removal operations.

    8. Plows snow, spreads ice melting chemicals (salt) and provides operator level maintenance of plow and spreader equipment.

    9. Additional emergency operations may be mandatory in the event of a crisis, such as acts of nature like floods, tornados or other storms. This may include sandbagging, or other cleanup detail as assigned.

    10. Must be able to perform all safety essential functions of the position, which includes, but not limited to, electrical system operations and confined space entry.

    11. Assists the Heavy Equipment Operator for Sewer On-Call duties.

    12. Performs the duties of a Sanitation Worker as necessary.

    13. Operates equipment and vehicles in such a manner as to prevent injury to self, coworkers, property and equipment.

    14. Performs other duties as assigned.


    Education: Requires a level of knowledge normally acquired through the successful completion of high school or a GED equivalency. This position requires the successful completion of the Iowa Civil Service examination, meeting additional requirements stated in the Code of Iowa. Must possess, and maintain throughout the duration of employment, a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrake and tank endorsements.


    Experience: Requires six (6) to twelve (12) months experience operating light equipment and trucks.


    Analytical Abilities: Requires the ability to operate vehicles, equipment and tools in such manner as to prevent injury to self, co-workers, property and equipment. This includes parameters for mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) to perform all job related duties.


    Interpersonal Skills: Requires excellent interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with co-workers, other City employees, contractors, residents and respond to requests made by the general public. Must be an effective team player and requires the ability to work independently.


    Working Conditions: Requires extensive standing, bending, stooping, pulling, pushing and lifting of materials and equipment ranging in weight from under 1 pound to over 100 pounds. (Including but not limited to: sewer camera- 75 lbs., generator- 60 lbs., and concrete adjusting rings 94 to 282 lbs.) Performs majority of work assignment outdoors where weather conditions range from mild to severe. Possible limited exposure to sewer gases, herbicides, toxic, and degreasers. Requires repetitive and sustained stooping or squatting for manhole and catch basin repair, and the installation of rolled erosion products. Forceful pulling of charged hose for sewer cleaning vehicle. Sustained driving of vehicles may be required. Occasional climbing is performed during catch basin repair, and storm sewer cleaning operations.


    Work Schedule: Generally 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with a half hour unpaid lunch. Hours may vary based on flexible scheduling or needs of the department. Must be available outside of and in addition to these hours for weekend solid waste collection, City meetings and emergency activities. Will be required to be on call for snow removal from November 15 and ending March 31 of every year.
