City of Bettendorf - Primary Logo - Full Color - Parks Maintenance

 

Under general supervision, repairs and maintains City parks and open spaces, trails, recreational facilities, public parking lots and park equipment; and performs related work as required.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES PERFORMED:  (Duties may include but are not limited to the following)

  1. Inspects, maintains, and repairs City property and facilities, including picking up trash and maintaining trash receptacles, cleaning and restocking restrooms, and removing graffiti as necessary
  2. Operates, maintains, and cleans City equipment, i.e., trucks, light equipment, tractors, mowers, hand tools; performs minor repair and preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles assigned.
  3. Maintains turf grass in parks, open spaces, municipal building grounds, and athletic fields by mowing, trimming, edging, spraying, seeding, or sodding.
  4. Performs tree cutting, pruning, and removal as necessary. Assists with pesticide application to turf and beds to minimize growth of noxious weeds under the guidance and direction of a certified applicator.
  5. Operates snow removal equipment such as a pick-up truck or tractor with a snowplow, spreads ice melting chemicals (salt) and provides operator level maintenance of plow and spreader equipment as necessary.
  6. Prepares facilities for winter shutdown and spring opening, including shelters, boat docks, tennis nets and windscreens.
  7. Requires the ability to operate equipment and vehicles in such a manner as to prevent injury to self, coworkers, property, and equipment. This includes parameters for mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) to perform all job-related duties.
  8. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  9. Keeps immediate supervisor informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  10. Reports any problems witnessed in the parks to their supervisor.

 

NON-ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

 

Education: 

Requires a level of knowledge normally acquired through the successful completion of high school or a GED equivalency.

 

Experience: 

Requires one (1) to two (2) years of experience in park maintenance (mowing, turf maintenance, landscape maintenance, athletic field maintenance, and tree planting and maintenance), or any other equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies to perform the essential duties required of the position. 

 

The successful candidate must possess, and maintain throughout the duration of employment, a valid driver’s license.

 

Interpersonal Skills: 

Requires excellent interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with co-workers, other city employees, and respond to requests made by the public.  Must be an effective team player and requires the ability to work independently.

 

Working Conditions: 

  • Performs most of the work assignment outdoors in all weather conditions ranging from mild to severe.
  • Requires extensive standing, bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, and lifting of materials and equipment ranging in weight from under 1 pound to over 100 pounds from ground to approximately forty inches (40”) in height.
  • Requires continuous standing for long periods of time.
  • Sustained or repetitive reaching may be performed from ground to above shoulder height to complete tree trimming and other related repair tasks.
  • Tool usage requires constant and repetitive grasp, and imparts segmental upper body vibration, which may be sustained for up to several hours.
  • Frequent climbing is required on and off vehicles and equipment.
  • Sustained driving of vehicles may be required for mowing or snow removal.
  • Daily exposed to noise, dust, vibration, fumes, animal and human fecal matter, insects, rodents, and chemicals when spraying.

This position has an hourly wage of  $17.2423 per hour.
