GENERAL SUMMARY

Working under the direction of Recreation Coordinator – The Landing, this position, along with the Shift Manager, will be an acting manager on duty.  Responsibilities include daily operation and maintenance of Zamboni, daily maintenance of ice and rink conditions, sharpening and repairing rental skates and equipment, performing additional maintenance and custodial duties as needed, assisting with accidents and incidents, assist in opening/closing the ice rink, informing patrons of the rules, and assisting all other staff while on duty.

Responsibilities

AREAS OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Drive the Zamboni correctly and safely to maintain the ice surface during rink operating hours, and perform regular Zamboni maintenance, storage, and water hook-up.
  2. Along with the Shift Manager on duty, perform as on-site manager. Primary contact/person responsible for customers and staff.
  3. Remove all snow, in and around the rink surfaces, to the building entrances and clean skating rink surfaces of snow as required.
  4. Skate sharpening and monitor condition of skates for proper rental conditions: sanitary spray, sharp, free of any dangerous conditions.
  5. Manage crowd control: making sure customers are not in unauthorized areas, behaving responsibly, etc.
  6. Regular monitoring of refrigeration equipment and ensuring proper temp range, make adjustments as needed or directed.
  7. Checking all mechanical devices for safe and proper operation.
  8. Facility checks: gates, doors, parking lot, etc.
  9. Participate in keeping all areas of the facility neat, clean and safe at all times.
  10. Assist with opening, closing and securing the facility according to rink policy.
  11. Assist rink attendants and clerks as needed with their positions.
  12. Work with the Shift Manager to manage all accidents, injuries, and/or incidents, both in the lodge and on the ice, and enforce all safety rules.
  13. Know and enforce safety standards and policies of the City of Bettendorf.
  14. Offers excellent customer service to all patrons. Greets customers with a smile and responds to patron needs in a kind and courteous manner.
  15. Complete accurate and appropriate maintenance and mechanical reports.
  16. Ensure all equipment, Zamboni, etc. is secure at the end of each work day.
  17. Must have reliable transportation and must be able to work all scheduled hours, including early afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
  18. Attend regular staff meetings and in-services.
  19. Performs the basic first aid and CPR/AED skills if necessary.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

WORK SCHEDULE

 

Work schedule will take place November through February, or as weather permits. Variable schedule working afternoon weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. The potential for a year-round schedule may be discussed.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Education: 

Requires a level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of high school.

 

Experience:

Previous experience driving a Zamboni machine is highly preferred, and previous experience supervising and/or working at an ice rink is desired.

 

Interpersonal Skills:

Must work well in a team environment.  Must have the ability to bee firm with the staff and the participants when necessary and make sound decisions to ensure the safety and well being of participants, facilities and equipment.  An ability to interact and communicate well with others is essential.

 

Analytical Ability:

Routine and non-recurring problem-solving skills are required.  Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively.  This will include the ability to complete daily reports.  An understanding of basic mathematics is required.  Be able to follow safety guidelines and exercise good judgment in all aspects of responsibility.  Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.  Must be able to operate efficiently and safely all equipment for this position and in accordance with city policies and direction.

 

Physical Demands: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 60 pounds.

 

Work Environment: 

The employee primarily works outside in remote weather conditions and exposed to extreme cold, wet and/or humid conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Job Requirements:

Individual must have proper certification for CPR/AED and First Aid. If not currently certified, this training will be provided by employer.

 

 

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to:       Recreation Coordinator – The Landing

Supervision:     Assists Recreation Coordinator with the supervision of other staff members and volunteers.
